By M. Santhiran
NEW DELHI, Jan 19 (Bernama) -- Most of the Malaysian students in India are doing well academically and there has been no report of their involvement in any militant-related activities.
Malaysian High Commissioner to India, Naimun Ashakli Mohammad said currently, there were nearly 5,000 Malaysian students who were mostly based in the state of Karnataka, South India.
"We are constantly monitoring them and so far, there have been no reports or complaints about them from the local authorities there," he said.
The high commissioner said recently a dialogue session was held with visiting Public Service Department director-general Mohamad Zabidi Zainal, where the students were reminded to stay away from all negative elements.
Naimun was speaking to 42 visiting Malaysian journalists and members of the Perak Media Sports and Welfare Club.
The club members were accompanied by its advisor, press secretary to the prime minister Akhmar Hisham Mohd Yusof.
The group visited China last year and they are now on a five-day trip to New Delhi, Agra and Jaipur, in Rajasthan.
During their visit to the High Commission complex here, they were briefed on diplomatic relations between Malaysia and India and the Malaysian private sector's involvement in major infrastructural projects in India.
Naimun also disclosed that Malaysian and Indian officials were involved in preliminary discussions on the construction of a convention centre in New Delhi.
On tourism, he said last year more than 700,000 Indian tourists visited Malaysia and spent nearly US$411.50 million (RM1.8 billion).
