Thai PM: ASEAN summit to be held in Hua Hin

BANGKOK, Jan 7 (TNA) - In an attempt to avoid chaos to be caused by anti-government protesters threatening to block the venue of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit due to be held in Bangkok, Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said on Wednesday his government had decided to move the meeting venue to the resort town of Hua Hin.

Mr. Abhisit said the dates of ASEAN summit would remain unchanged from between February 27-March 1, but the venue will be changed to the seaside resort Hua Hin, southwest of Bangkok.

However, the meeting among ASEAN leaders with the group's dialogue partners --China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand -- is expected to be held in late April with the meeting venue was yet to be decided, Mr. Abhisit said.

Explaining that the venue of the ASEAN summit has been changed because he does not want possible chaos to erupt from a protest by the anti-government United Front of Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD, Mr. Abhisit said Thai security officials advised a change of the venue would be better for improved security.

The venue of the ASEAN summit will not be further changed, he said. UDD protesters are demanding that the coalition government of Mr. Abhisit resign unconditionally and that a new general election held.

ASEAN comprises 10 nations of South East Asia -- Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. (TNA)
