U.S. museum to exhibit art of Korea's ancient dynasty
SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) -- The early Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) period, a time of marked artistic achievements in Korea, will be explored in an exhibition opening at a major U.S arts museum, officials here said Wednesday.
The exhibition, "Art of the Korean Renaissance, 1400-1600" opening in March at
New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, will showcase about 50 art works in
paintings, ceramics, metalwork and lacquer, including 32 loaned by three major
South Korean galleries.
National treasures, including Joseon's most notable flask-shaped white porcelain
and a delicate painting titled "Mother Dog and Puppies," have been approved by
the South Korean government to be flown to the United States, the National Museum
of Korea said. The exhibition will also display Joseon masterpieces loaned from
Japan.
The royals and elites of Joseon replaced the Buddhist establishment with
neo-Confucian ideals, which enriched the kingdom with a formidable cultural
renaissance and explosion of art. Buddhist art endured despite the official
policies, however, contributing to the rich complexity of the early Joseon
culture.
Major museums in South Korea, Japan and the United States -- the National Museum
of Korea, Leeum, Samsung Museum of Art, Kyushu National Museum of Japan, Museum
of Fine Arts, Boston -- contributed their collections to his exhibition.
The show will run from March 17 through June 21 and will be featured on the U.S.
museum's website www.metmuseum.org.
