Gov't to unveil measures to develop core technologies: official

SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) -- The government said Wednesday it will announce sweeping
investment plans this month mostly focused on developing core technologies in a
bid to secure a new growth potential for the slumping local economy.

"Details will be announced by the prime minister's office in mid-January," Deputy
Vice Finance Minister Noh Dae-lae told reporters in a press briefing. He declined
to comment on the scale of the investment or businesses to be included.
The planned funding will be in addition to a 50 trillion won (US$38 billion)
investment package unveiled the previous day by the finance ministry called the
"Green New Deal."
That project is aimed at creating around 1 million jobs over the next four years
by creating dams, bike paths and various eco-friendly businesses, according to
the ministry.
Experts, however, raise concerns that the project will mostly generate low-paying
part-time jobs in construction and call for more efforts to be made to enhance
the overall competitiveness of the nation's high-tech sector for longer-term
development.
