2nd LD) U.S. Army offers rare collection of Korean War images online

(ATTN: ADDS comments in paras 4-5)
SEOUL, Jan. 7 (Yonhap) -- The U.S. Army has posted a rare collection of photos
and videos from the Korean War on the Internet, offering an extensive look at a
conflict that razed the peninsula nearly six decades ago.

The archives, released by the Installation Management Command Korea (IMCOM-K),
include some 40 videos and 150 still photos captured by military cameramen and
photographers, and chronicle the 1950-53 conflict that left millions of soldiers
and civilians dead on both sides.
Posted on YouTube and photo-sharing site Flickr, the images retrieved from the
National Archives are in black and white except one video clip in color, and show
the faces of the war through refugees, battles, ravaged cities, truce talks,
wounded soldiers, air strikes, and tanks and heavy artillery in action.
Edward Johnson, IMCOM-K spokesman, said that as soon as he discovered these
images he realized "how historically significant they were."
"We started looking for ways to share them with the rest of our military
community and our Korean Allies," Johnson wrote in an email, saying he was
"amazed by the contrast that these images provide between the war-time years and
Korea today."
The clips include documentaries produced by the U.S. Army following the war, such
as "The Army in Action." The video and photos can be found at
http://www.youtube.com/warinkorea and
http://www.flickr.com/photos/imcomkorea/sets/72157607808414225, respectively.
The U.S. fought on the South Korean side and has about 28,500 troops stationed
here as a legacy of the war that ended in a truce rather than a peace treaty.
