8th parliamentary elections according to the country's Constitution, but the list

Each candidate gets three days to campaign.

N. Korean defector surrenders herself to police
SEOUL -- A North Korean defector who lived in China in hiding for more than a
decade recently smuggled into South Korea and has surrendered herself to the
authorities here, police said Wednesday.
The 31-year old woman, identified only by her surname Kim, voluntarily appeared
in the Gwangjin Police Station in eastern Seoul on Monday and is currently under
supervision by the National Intelligence Service, according to officers at the
station.

S. Korea strives to ink free trade deal with EU at early date: official
SEOUL -- South Korea will seek to clinch a free trade deal with the European
Union (EU) at an early date as negotiations are in their last stage, a trade
official said Wednesday.
Since the signing of an FTA with the United States in 2007, South Korea has held
seven rounds of negotiations with the EU, the nation's second-largest trading
partner after China.

SEOUL -- South Korean stocks closed 2.84 percent higher Wednesday as foreign
investors snapped up electronics and other large-cap shares, analysts said. The
local currency jumped against the U.S. dollar.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) surged 33.89 points to a
12-week high of 1,228.17, gaining for a fifth session. Volume was heavy at 561.81
million shares worth 7.55 trillion won (US$5.84 billion), with winners outpacing
losers 594 to 244.

Gov't to unveil measures to develop core technologies: official
SEOUL -- The government said Wednesday it will announce sweeping investment plans
this month mostly focused on developing core technologies in a bid to secure a
new growth potential for the slumping local economy.
"Details will be announced by the prime minister's office in mid-January," Deputy
Vice Finance Minister Noh Dae-lae told reporters in a press briefing. He declined
to comment on the scale of the investment or businesses to be included.

reshuffle its management this month in the first executive shake-up since the
departure of its charismatic former chairman Lee Kun-hee.
The 67-year-old Lee, who had been at the helm of Samsung for two decades, stepped
down in April last year in the wake of a parliament-ordered corruption probe that
led to his indictment for tax evasion and other charges.
