Crown Prince meets with NIHR President

Manama, Dec. 24 (BNA): His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, Crown Prince, Deputy Supreme Commander and First Deputy Prime Minister today met the President of the National Institution for Human Rights (NIHR), Dr Abdulaziz Hassan Abul, at Gudabiya Palace. The NIHR was established to develop, promote and protect human rights through the examination and research of complaints related to human rights within the Kingdom. The NIHR’s second annual report was issued recently and Dr Abul presented the report’s findings and recommendations to His Royal Highness during the meeting. His Royal Highness emphasised that the Kingdom continually makes efforts to improve its laws and ensure that human rights are protected within the Kingdom, and stressed that Bahrain’s constitution and National Action Charter underpin the country’s efforts to safeguard individual rights and justice. His Royal Highness added that the commitment to protecting and promoting human rights is a key component of His Majesty King Hamad’s programme of reform and development His Royal Highness and Dr Abul then discussed the findings and recommendations outlined in the NIHR report, particularly the NIHR’s compliance with the Paris Principles, which relate to national institutions’ protection of human rights. In this regard, His Royal Highness praised the role and work of the NIHR in advancing and protecting human rights within the Kingdom, and added that the institution has been instrumental in strengthening collaboration between Bahrain and international human rights institutions such as the UN Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights. His Royal Highness welcomed the independent and wide-ranging work carried out by the NIHR, and stressed that the Kingdom remains committed to upholding internationally recognised standards to ensure individual rights are protected at all times. In response, Dr Abul emphasised that the on-going support the institution receives plays a vital role in helping it to meet its goals and objectives. The board members of the NIHR also attended the meeting.
