Toyota to suspend domestic output 11 more days amid global auto slump

NAGOYA, Jan. 6 Kyodo -
Toyota Motor Corp. will further trim its production by suspending operations
for an additional 11 days at all of its 12 Japanese factories between February
and March to combat plummeting auto sales due to the global economic downturn,
Toyota officials said Tuesday.
Industry observers said the expansion of the rare output reduction by Japan's
top automaker is likely to have a further detrimental impact on employment
conditions at its subcontracting firms like auto parts suppliers.
Toyota is not alone in pursuing production cuts after the turn of the year with
other major Japanese automakers like Honda Motor Co., Suzuki Motor Co. and
Mitsubishi Motors Corp. also planning to suspend production lines for a limited
period during this month.
Toyota had already planned to carry out a three-day suspension of operations at
most of its domestic factories in January and scrapping nighttime operations at
11 of its domestic and overseas factories, including those of its subsidiaries.
With the latest measures, it will suspend operations at all of its 12 domestic
factories in Aichi Prefecture for four weekdays and two Saturdays in February
while halting operations for three weekdays and two Saturdays in March.
Toyota was forced to consider the additional output reduction as inventories
continued to pile up with the slump in global auto sales showing no signs of
recovery.
The automaker had also initially planned to limit its output cuts to the luxury
Lexus models amid their sharply shrinking sales in the United States.
The outlook further deteriorated with Toyota's new car sales in the United
States dropping 36.7 percent from a year earlier to 141,949 units in December
as previously robust sales of smaller-sized models dwindled.
Last month, Toyota said it expects a 150 billion yen operating loss for the
current business year to March in what would be its first-ever group operating
loss.
To combat rapidly worsening business conditions, the company said it will
either delay or review almost all projects aimed at expanding production
capacity or building new plants around the world.
