Gist of government investment in `green` projects
SEOUL, Jan. 6 (Yonhap) -- The following is the gist of the government's "green"
development projects unveiled on Tuesday to create jobs and bolster the slumping
economy.
1. River-streamlining project
-- Construct dams, banks and other water-management facilities around four major
rivers to reduce flood and drought risk
-- Re-designate disaster-prone areas
-- Plant more trees along four major rivers and clean surrounding areas
-- 18 trillion won to be invested; 280,000 jobs to be created
2. Eco-friendly transportation networks
-- Expand investments on building low-carbon emitting transportation systems
-- Bring forward the schedule for the construction of Seoul-Busan and Honam
high-speed railways
-- Construct more transit points for public transportation and bicycle roads across
the nation
-- 11 trillion won to be invested; 160,000 jobs to be created
3. Green database
-- Build compressive database that provides the nation's geological information
-- 0.7 trillion won to be invested; 20,000 jobs to be created
4. Water resources, dam construction
-- Construct small and medium-sized dams to secure more water sources and reduce
water-related disasters
-- Encourage exports of dam-building technologies
-- Expand investment in technology to produce fresh water
-- Improve sewage disposal system
-- 2 trillion won to be invested; 30,000 jobs to be created
5. Green cars, clean energy
-- Supply eco-friendly cars and clean energy
-- Accelerate development of hybrid vehicle technologies
-- 2 trillion won to be invested; 15,000 jobs to be created
6. Recycling
-- Expand investments on transforming waste into recycled energy
-- Expand investment in biomass power production and building landfills
-- 3 trillion won to be invested; 50,000 jobs to be created
7. Forest biomass
-- Expand green area across the nation by planting more trees
-- Expand investment on forest biomass power and prevent forest fires
-- 3 trillion won to be invested; 230,000 jobs to be created
8. Energy-saving efforts
-- Construct 2 million eco-friendly homes and offices that use less energy and
electricity
-- Replace electric lights in government buildings with energy-efficient LEDs
-- 9 trillion won to be invested; 150,000 jobs to be created
9. Eco-friendly village
-- Restore rivers that run through villages
-- Build eco-friendly roads
-- Turn closed schools into leisure and cultural space
-- 0.6 trillion won to be invested; 15,000 jobs to be created
