Supreme Leader: US, UK root cause of problems in Iraq

Tehran, Jan 5, IRNA - Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said
on Sunday that the presence of US and UK forces in Iraq is the root
cause of all problems such as terrorism.

The Supreme Leader made the remark in a meeting with Iraqi Prime
Minister Nuri al-Maliki in Tehran on Sunday.

At the meeting, Ayatollah Khamenei said expansion of ties with all
ethnic and political groups as well as followers of various religions,
trust in people and expansion and consolidation of ties with Iraq's
neighbors will bring the country power and authority.

The Iraqi government should rely on this and believe that the people's
religious beliefs, courage and dignity would be regarded as a great
asset for Iraq, said the Supreme Leader.

Iran trusts the Iraqi premier and government, said the Supreme Leader
adding, "We call for dignity, independence, tranquility and
development of Iraq and will spare no efforts to this end."

Presence of US and British soldiers in Iraq is the root cause of the
country's problems such as terrorism and internal disputes and rifts,
said the Ayatollah Khamenei, adding that as long as the Americans are
in Iraq, its people never feel at home.

Referring to the plots of the US administration for more influence and
plundering man-made and natural resources of world countries, the
Supreme Leader said there are some concerns about US-Iraq security
pact, adding that the Americans are bullying and never keep their
promises even for their close allies therefore, they are totally
untrustworthy.

Resistance and vigilance is the only way to counter the plots of the
US and UK, said Ayatollah Khamenei, adding, "You should prove to the
Iraqi people that their government is not ready to yield to the hue
and cries of the enemies and never give up from the country's national
interests.

The US seeks to establish a permanent base for dominating the region,
said the Supreme Leader.

The Iraqi premier, for his part, said expansion of economic and
political cooperation could turn to an exemplary model for the entire
region and wished for consolidation of ties with the Islamic Republic
of Iran.
