National Loss – “Khaleej Times” Editorial

Abu Dhabi, Jan 4, 2009 (WAM) - 'The soft-spoken, kind and gentle Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmad Al Mualla belonged in the league of visionary leaders that worked alongside the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum to build the great country that we see today. He is no more with us', “Khaleej Times” mourned.
In an editorial under the title 'A National Loss', the paper remembered how valuable a leader he was to the nation.
The paper said: 'Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmad Al Mualla, Ruler of the Emirate of Umm Al Qaiwain, is no more. Sheikh Rashid had been in his seventies and had not been keeping well for some time.
'The United Arab Emirates has officially announced a week of mourning, during which flags will fly at half-mast.
'Sheikh Rashid, who had been leading the Emirate since 1981, had been undergoing treatment in London. And in his absence Crown Prince Sheikh Saud was running the affairs of the Emirate. He has now formally taken over as the Ruler of the Emirate.
'A subdued atmosphere and feeling of sadness among the people was witnessed, as the news of Sheikh Rashid's death spread across the country. Messages of condolences are pouring in from rulers of all the emirates as well as world leaders, and a wide circle of friends and acquaintances.
'Sheikh Rashid, the Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Umm Al Qaiwain, took over the reins of the emirate in 1981. The ruling family of this emirate is referred to as the Bani Ahmad group, with the emirate receiving special attention in federal funding for local projects.
'Before succeeding his father, Sheikh Rashid used to represent him on the UAE Supreme Council, and in the day-to-day affairs of the state. Widely respected, he used to represent his father in negotiations with Iran and neighbouring Sharjah, concerning the emirate's share of the Mubarak oilfield.
Born in 1932, Sheikh Rashid bin Ahmad received religious education at the hands of his industrious father. He was known as a prudent man who was well versed in tribal affairs and a generous soul as well. Before becoming head of the emirate, he used to direct the local municipality and chamber of commerce, as well as business enterprises owned by the family and the government.
'The departed leader's services will be well remembered, especially his untiring efforts to build a modern civic infrastructure in his emirate. He worked relentlessly for radical improvements in all sectors, especially in modernising the education curriculum of his small emirate.
“Khaleej Times” concluded its editorial with the following words:
'The soft-spoken, kind and gentle Sheikh Rashid belonged in the league of visionary leaders that worked alongside the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan and the late Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum to build the great country that we see today. He is no more with us. But his services will fondly be long remembered'.
