Two more deaths from New Year's nightclub blaze
BANGKOK, Jan 3 (TNA) - Two more partygoers who were victims of the New Year's inferno at a luxurious nightclub at a prime Bangkok entertainment venue died late Friday, bringing the death toll to 61, a senior public health ministry official said.
Dr. Chatree Charoentheerakul, Secretary-General of the Institute of Emergency Medical Services, said a man and a woman succumbed at a Bangkok hospital on Friday night.
The victims were identified as Miss Vipawan Tanompanyarak and Mr. Yutthana Sinpaiboonpol.
Nearly 250 party-goers were injured in the blaze which occurred at the Santika Club on Ekamai Road at about 12.30 am on New Year's Day.
By early Saturday, 26 of the injured victims were still receiving treatment in the intensive care units of
various hospitals, according to Dr. Chatree.
Regarding medical expenses for injured patients now receiving treatment at private hospitals, Dr. Chatree said he had discussed with Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai who agreed that the ministry would coordinate with those hospitals to lower the cost, if possible.
The owner of the nightclub must also be held responsible for the tragic incident, Dr. Chatree said, and if he refuses, the issue will be forwarded to a cabinet meeting so that action can be taken.
The nightclub owner was also injured and is receiving treatment at a hospital.
Deputy National Police Chief Police General Jongrak Jutanont, Deputy National Police Chief said the authorities had interviewed survivors to establish the cause of the blaze, which was yet to be concluded.
Club owner Wisuth Setsawat was initially charged with allowing underage customers into the Santika Club,as a 17-year-old high school student was found among the dead, he said. (TNA)
