Bangkok Police set up identification centre for nightclub fire victims

BANGKOK, Jan 1 (TNA) - Thailand's National Police Bureau on Thursday established an identification centre after over 25 bodies of fire victims at a luxurious nightclub here which caught fire early on New Year's Day were burned beyond recognition, according to a senior police officer.

Pol. Lt-Gen. Danaithorn Wongthai, Chief of the Office of Police Forensic Science, said the centre was set up at Thong Lor police station, near the Santika Club where the blaze occurred from inside at about 30 minutes into the new year on New Year's Day, killing 59 revellers and leaving 243 people injured and mostly hospitalised.

The area around the club in Ekamai Soi 9, a popular site for nightowls, has been declared a disaster zone.

General Danaithorn said relatives of the victims should bring dentistry records, fingerprints or DNA along with them so that officials could compare with the bodies they are as yet unable to identify.

Meanwhile, Pol. Col. Suthin Sappaueng, head of the Thong Lor police station, said the Santika Club was registered under the name of Visook Setsawasdi who was also injured in the blaze.

Neither interrogation nor police charges have been imposed against him so far, said Pol. Col. Suthin.

Survivors from the inferno total 243 people, including three in critical condition, who were sent to public and private hospitals with instructions from Public Health Minister Witthaya Kaewparadai that patients should be given the best treatment and medical staff should not to worry about expenses, as all will be paid for by the ministry.

Most of the injured revellers suffered from smoke inhalation, cuts from broken glass and burns on their bodies. (TNA)
