French tourist dies in Byron Bay fall

A 22-year-old French tourist has died in a cliff fall during New Year's Eve
celebrations on the NSW north coast.
Police say the man and friends were ushering in the New Year at Byron Bay's The Pass
lookout, when he disappeared sometime after 4.30am (AEDT) on Thursday.
Noticing he was no longer with them, friends began a search of the popular tourist
spot at 6am (AEDT).
They found him lying on rocks at the bottom of the lookout, suffering serious head
and leg injuries.
The tourist was airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital but he died at 11am, a police
spokeswoman said.
Police are not treating the death as suspicious, but are interviewing those with the
man on Wednesday night in an effort to establish how he fell to his death.
"Police have spoken to a number of his friends - we do need to get formal statements
from everybody up there," the police spokeswoman said.
"And we have been in touch with the French consulate, and we've also been trying to
make contact with his family."
A post mortem examination will now be conducted on the man's body, while police will
prepare a report for the coroner.
