Iran looking for ways to send medical aid to Gaza
Tehran, Dec 31, IRNA - Minister of Health Kamran Baqeri Lankarani said on Tuesday evening
that Tehran is looking for ways to send medical aid for the people of
Gaza.
The minister made the remarks in a meeting with Hamas
representative to Iran, Abu Osameh Al-Mo'ti at the movement's office
in Tehran.
Hundreds of Iranian physicians and nurses have voiced readiness to be
sent to Gaza following Israel's deadly attacks on the defenseless
Gazans since December 27, Lankarani said.
However, the Iranian medical team has yet failed to reach Gaza since
the government of Egypt refused to reopen borders leading into the
besieged area, the minister complained.
He voiced Tehran's readiness to receive injured Gazans in Iranian
hospitals for medical treatment.
Lankarani expressed hope that Cairo would allow entry of the injured
from Gaza into Egypt so that they can be transferred to Iran.
The minister added that for the time being, the only safe way to send
humanitarian aid to Gaza is from the air.
Iran's has so far sent a planeload of food and medicine for the
besieged people of Gaza.
According to Lankarani, a center was set up in Tehran to collect
public aid for the defenseless people of Gaza.
He added that representatives from the government and
non-government medical bodies are present in the center.
Meanwhile, the Hamas representative said in the meeting that all
hospitals in Gaza were filled with injured people mostly women and
children who need intensive care.
Al-Mo'ti said that a number of the wounded were even kept in corridors
due to their high number and lack of enough beds for them.
He stressed that it was necessary to send the injured Gazans to other
countries for treatment.
Al-Mo'ti added that the besieged people of Gaza needed some 700
truckload of medical aid, foodstuff and fuel each day while only 17
trucks are given permission to enter Gaza on a daily basis.
The Hamas envoy stressed that preventing shipment of humanitarian aid
to Gaza was against the international law.
