(LEAD) Hyundai Heavy misses 2008 order target

(ATTN: ADDS more details in last two paras)
SEOUL, Dec. 31 (Yonhap) -- Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., the world's largest
shipbuilder, said Wednesday that it failed to meet this year's order target due
to the global economic slump.

It received orders valued at a record US$28.2 billion this year, up 12.77 percent
from $25 billion last year, the shipyard said in a regulatory filing.
But it fell short of its yearly target of $29.4 billion, according to Hyundai Heavy.
Its sales increased 23.36 percent to 19.63 trillion won this year as orders came
in for higher priced vessels.
Hyundai Heavy clinched orders to build 110 vessels this year, compared with 148
ships secured last year. The company had no new orders for three months since
October.
The shipyard delivered 102 vessels this year, 28 percent more than in 2007, with
its order backlog stretching over nearly four years.
