Abdullah bin Zayed calls for one Arab voice and position to tackle the Gaza issue

Muscat, Dec 31, 2008 (WAM) - The Arab League Ministerial Council will hold a meeting in Cairo Wednesday to discuss the situation in Gaza, UAE Foreign Minister Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan has said.

Speaking shortly after the closing session of the 29th GCC Summit, Sheikh Abdullah said: "What is important now is to find a mechanism for resolving this issue, be it a meeting or summit. Nevertheless, there must be one Arab voice and position".

Sheikh Abdullah added: "It is difficult to talk of the summit or where it should be held before the meeting of the foreign ministers".

Asked about the issue of the three UAE islands occupied by Iran, Sheikh Abdullah said: "I think this issue is clear in the final communiqué. The position of the GCC countries is clear. It is one that supports the UAE's rights and sovereignty over its islands. The GCC countries also support resolution of the issue through bilateral talks or international arbitration".

On the proposed joint GCC peaceful nuclear programme, Sheikh Abdullah revealed that the summit was briefed on the outcome of the GCC talks between the GCC Secretariat and the International Atomic Energy Agency. The results of these talks have been adopted and a special body will be assigned to undertake feasibility studies.
