Sharjah Ruler honours winners of the Sharjah Voluntary Work Award 2008

Sharjah, Dec 31, 2008 (WAM) - HH Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Mohammed Al Qasimi, UAE Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah honoured yesterday the winners of the Sharjah Voluntary Work Award 2008.

The award ceremony at the Cultural Palace in Sharjah was organised by the General Secretariat of the Award to honour individuals and institutions in the field of voluntary work on the domestic, regional and Arab levels.

The awards also coincide with the International Volunteer Day which falls on 5th December every year.

The ceremony was also attended by Crown Prince and Deputy Ruler of Sharjah HH Sheikh Sultan Bin Mohammed Bin Sultan Al Qasimi, HH Sheikh Saeed Bin Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research HE Sheikh Nahyan Bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Chairman of the Dubai Department of Information Sheikh Hashr Bin Maktoum Al Maktoum, Minister of Culture, Youth and Community Development HE Abdul Rahman Mohammed Al Oweis, Sheikhs and officials.

In a welcome address Minister of Health and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Award HE Humaid Mohammed Obeid Al Qatami shed light on the inception and the history of the award.

The Sharjah Voluntary Work Award, founded by the Sharjah Ruler, is considered the first award in the entire Arab world set up to recognise the voluntary work.

The award is given in eight different categories and recognises individuals, institutions, non-profit organisations, educational institutions, public welfare associations, NGOs and initiatives helping the people with special needs for their excellence in the field of voluntary work.

Sheikh Sultan, accompanied by Health Minister H.E. Humaid Al Qatami, honoured winners of the award, including HRH Prince Abdul Aziz bin Ahmed bin Abdul Aziz Al Saud, Princess, Lala Salma, wife of the King of Morocco, H.H. Sheikha Hind bint Maktoum Al Maktoum, wife of Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Saeed Juma Al Nabooda, Obaid Khalifa Jaber Al Marri, the late Dr Fatima Hadi, who was awarded the title posthumously, the Emirates International Heart Group and Qareeb Al Manal, a Dubai Media Incorporated-sponsored humanitarian programme.

The medal of 'Ideal Donor' was also awarded to eight regular blood donors.
