TWO STRONG QUAKES HIT BENGKULU

Bengkulu, Sumatra, Dec 31 (ANTARA) - Two earthquakes respectively measuring 5.9 and 5.1 on the Richter scale hit Bengkulu province on Sumatra Island in the early morning of Wednesday, the national meteorology and geophysics agency (BMG) has said.

It said the first quake with a magnitude of 5.9 struck at 2:49 a.m. local time with its epicenter at 156 kilometers southwest of Lais at a depth of 10 kilometers below the sea bed, or between 4.42 degrees southern latitude and 100.96 degrees eastern longitude.
And the second quake occurred at 3:32 a.m. local time with the magnitude of 5.1, between 4.43 degrees southern latitude and 1001.06 degrees eastern longitude, or some 141 kilometers southwest of Lais. However, there were no reports of damage or casualty in the disaster.
On September 12, 2007 a tectonic earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale jolted Bengkulu province, leaving at 15 people dead some 50 others injured.
That quake also destroyed or damaged 53,172 houses, 292 places of worship, 903 schools, 327 units of health facility, and 412 office buildings.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where continental plates meet, causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity.
