Iran calls on UNESCO to condemn Israeli war crimes in Gaza
Paris, Dec 30, IRNA - Iran called on the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization to condemn Israeli war crimes in Gaza, it was reported on Tuesday.
In a letter to UNESCO Secretary General Koichiro Matsuura, Iran's
permanent ambassador to the organization, Mohammad-Reza Majidi asked
the international body to take serious and due measures to help the
besieged Gazans who are exposed to Israeli savage attacks for a fourth
day.
Majidi told IRNA that UNESCO was asked in the letter to break its
silence and act based on its Charter to help humanity.
The international body was also asked to help create proper
opportunities for Gazans to educate as all educational institutes
including all schools and universities were closed due to the Israeli
air strikes.
Israel bombarded the Islamic University in Gaza on Sunday night.
Israel's brutality in the besieged area started since Saturday leaving
around 400 dead and over 1,700 injured mostly innocent women and
children.
Majidi said that copies of Iran's letter to UNESCO were also sent to
the Non-Aligned Movement member states as well as China and members of
the G-77 and the Arab and Islamic countries.
The letter also asked Matsuura to send a special envoy to Gaza to
estimate the damage inflicted by Israeli strikes on the Gaza's
educational institutes.
The secretary general was also asked to mobilize all member states of
UNESCO to send necessary supplies for the more than 1.5 million people
living under the Israeli siege.
Majidi criticized silence of the international bodies against Israeli
war crimes in Gaza stressing their silence was considered by Israel as
a greenlight for their crimes against humanity.
The ambassador added that committing war crimes in Gaza during the
last days of the Christian year was a pre-planned move as
international organizations are almost closed these days.
