Lotte seeks to revive skyscraper plan

SEOUL, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) -- A subsidiary of Lotte Group, South Korea's fifth-largest business conglomerate, said Tuesday it has asked the Seoul Metropolitan Government to resume work on approving its plan to build what would be the country's tallest building.

Lotte had planned to build a 112-story building in the southeastern corner of
Seoul where the group also runs an amusement park, but the plan hit a snag last
year as the Air Force said the proposed skyscraper could undermine the safety of
flights taking off from a nearby airfield.
Lotte said it has been involved in talks with the Air Force to ensure the safety
of flights once construction is complete.
If the Seoul government approves the plan, Lotte plans to complete construction
in five years at a cost of as much as two trillion won (US$1.6 billion).
In a statement, the Lotte affiliate said the Seoul government would permit
construction of the structure if it is proven that it will not interfere with
flight routes.
Currently, the tallest building in South Korea is 63 stories high.
