Seoul purchases transport aircraft from Indonesia

SEOUL, Dec. 30 (Yonhap) -- South Korea signed a $90-million deal with Indonesia this week to purchase four transport aircraft that will be used by the country's maritime police, the country's defense procurement office said Tuesday.

Four CN235-110 aircraft will be delivered to South Korea by 2011 under the deal
signed Monday, according to the Defense Acquisition Program Administration
(DAPA).
"The aircraft will be used by the maritime police to patrol our exclusive waters,
conduct anti-terrorism measures and search-rescue operations," the DAPA said in a
press release.
The Indonesian aircraft was selected from five competing models as it is already
in use by the country's Air Force, which makes it significantly easier to
maintain and repair, DAPA said.
With a near 2,000-kilometer flight radius, the aircraft is equipped with a
high-tech radar system that can simultaneously detect and monitor over 100
targets within a 360-kilometer range, it said.
