Lee renews determination to fight corruption, law violations By Yoo Cheong-mo

SEOUL, Dec. 29 (Yonhap) -- President Lee Myung-bak on Monday urged powerful and wealthy people to set an example of law observance, saying Korean society's poor awareness of the rule of law is a big obstacle to national advancement.

While being briefed on the Ministry of Justice's key 2009 policy goals, Lee said
backward labor practices and instability associated with North Korea are also
among the key factors that weigh on South Korea's sovereign brand value.
The president then reiterated that his government will further toughen crackdowns
on corruption, irregularities and illegal demonstrations.
"Despite remarkable economic development, our society's current level of law
observance remains disappointing. A (per capita) gross national income of
US$30,000 or $40,000 has nothing to do with becoming a first-rate advanced
state," Lee was quoted by his spokesman as saying.
"We can become an advanced nation only after upgrading all aspects of our lives.
My new government has a historic mission of stamping out corruption and
irregularities. In this sense, powerful and wealthy people and civil servants
should set an example for law observance," said the president.
Lee vowed to reinforce his government's efforts to enhance the sovereign brand
value, citing a recent international survey placing South Korea's national brand
value at just one-fiftieth of Japan.
"Korea's national brand turned out to be weaker than that of a certain Korean
conglomerate in a recent survey by a foreign research company. It is quite
unconventional," Lee was quoted as saying.
Presidential spokesman Lee Dong-kwan explained the president's remarks largely
referred to their backward demonstration practices.
Meanwhile, Prosecutor General Lim Chae-jin reported to the president that public
prosecutors will next year strive to firmly establish the rule of law to ensure
that corporate activities will be carried out in a productive and transparent
manner.
The top prosecutor also pledged to sternly deal with any illegal acts that create
social chaos and make greater efforts to regain public confidence by preventing
abuse of the prosecutorial rights.
