UAE-Oman relations strong: UAE envoy

Muscat, Dec 30, 2008 (WAM) - The UAE and Oman enjoy strong and unique brotherly relations, stressed today the UAE ambassador to Oman Mohammed Ali Al Osaimi.

He noted the efforts being made by the UAE-Omani Joint Committee to further boost relations between the two countries.

"The 29th summit of the leaders of the member states of the Council of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) is being held amid difficult situations in the Middle East. People in the region pin many great hopes on GCC", said Al Osaimi in a statement carried today by Oman daily newspaper.

GCC leaders, he continued, are keen on realising the aspirations of their peoples. Issue prioritised by the agenda of the 29th GCC Summit include energy, Iran's nuclear programme, and the UAE three islands which were occupied by Iran and were subjected to actions that further strengthened its control on them.

He said the cultural identity of the GCC member countries is currently facing challenges and trends and without timely containment, they will inevitably have their impact.

On Iraq, Al Osaimi said the situation there is relatively calm, noting that the UAE has been at the forefront of countries to extend all forms of help to Iraq including the reopening of its embassy in Baghdad.
