India offers to expand railway network in central Nepal: Yadav

Shirish B. Pradhan

Kathmandu, Dec 29 (PTI) India has offered to expand the railway network in central Nepal and upgrade the 30-km Jaynagar-Janakpur railway line, a top Indian leader of the coalition government in New Delhi has said.

Devendra Prasad Yadav, the Deputy leader of the
Rastriya Janata Dal, said India has offered to help in the
expansion of railway network upto Bardibas in Sindhuli
district in central Nepal and also to upgrade the 30-km
Jaynagar-Janakpur railway.

Yadav, who met top Nepalese leaders, including Prime
Minister Prachanda and Nepali Congress party president G P
Koirala during his visit, underlined the need for the two
countries to increase cooperation so as to solve the problems
of their citizens, particularly those living along the common
border in the Terai plains.

India is committed to construct 70-km broad gauge
railway line from Jaynagar to Bardibas, connecting East-Way
highway via Janakpur, he told PTI, wrapping up his brief
private visit Monday.

Yadav said India and Nepal have already signed an
agreement in this regard and now the construction works will
start in February. He said the matter figured during his talks
with Prime Minister Prachanda.

Now the Indian government is waiting for financial
approval for the construction works and once it is received
the construction will start, he stressed.

The former Indian Minister said Nepal and India should
cooperate in preventing water related disaster, harnessing
hydropower and providing irrigation facility to the people of
both the countries.

During my discussion with Prime Minister Prachanda we
discussed the Saptakoshi High Dam Project and Sunkoshi
Diversion, Yadav said. These two projects will help Nepal get
electricity and water for irrigation purposes, he underlined.

We are holding talks with Nepalese authorities about
short-term as well as long-term solution to the problems
related to water resources, he said.

He said India and Nepal must tackle the problems
related to flood, which has affected hundreds of thousand
people on both the sides of the border.

The two countries have already agreed on the
Saptakoshi High Dam Project in 2001 but the works could not
expedite, Yadav said, adding we must concentrate on preparing
the Detailed Project Report (DPR) of the project.
