Bangkokians to spend less this New Year holiday

BANGKOK, Dec 29 (TNA) - Bangkokians are expected to spend about 27 billion baht (US$770 million) during the upcoming New Year's holiday, down 12.9 per cent from last year, due to worries about economic problems in Thailand in 2009, according to a survey conducted by the Kasikorn Research Centre.

The survey, conducted on 575 people aged above 15 in Bangkok and upcountry between December 8-19, found that spending by Bangkokians during the five-day holiday, starting December 31, is expected to fall sharply as they would buy less presents, attend fewer parties and cut down travel expenses, both domestic and overseas.

Positive factors, which may encourage people in Bangkok to travel within or outside the country are, according to the survey, the longer than usual holidays, hotels offering hefty discounts and a sharp decline in domestic fuel prices, it said. (TNA)
