UAE to tighten anti-fraud regulations

The UAE is planning to introduce stiffer laws to curb fake products in its market within an overall campaign to protect copyrights and intellectual property, a senior Ministry of Economy official said yesterday according to a report in “Emirates Business.”

The new rules will cover counterfeit products entering the local market, trade marks, copyrights, intellectual and industrial property and jewel trading, said Abdullah Al Hussein, Director of the Ministry's Control Department.

"The Ministry is currently discussing several new deterrent laws to fight trade fraudulence at the UAE level," he said.

"The Ministry is also revising some federal laws on business dealing, trade marks, copyrights, intellectual and industrial property and jewellery trade; this revision is designed to block any loopholes in the laws and expand the powers of local law enforcement departments to allow them to combat such practices."

Al Hussein made the statement ahead of a three-day anti-fake products exhibition, opening at the Abu Dhabi Mall today.

The Ministry along with more than 20 companies will display their original products in face of fake items with the aim of creating public awareness about such practices and educate consumers on how to detect counterfeit products.

Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Planning and Economy Department, Mohammed Omar Abdullah, will open the show which will include watches, mobile phones, auto spare parts, CDs, electrical and electronic appliances, cosmetics, clothes, and other consumer items.
