Kuwait wins gold, bronze medals in Amman

23 (BNA): Kuwait's national team on Saturday won a gold medal in the foil contests of the Arab fencing championship, under-17, held in Amman, Jordan. Kuwait also won two bronze medals in sabre and epee contests. The Kuwaitis came first in the foil contests, teams, after they beat Qatar 45-32. The UAE team came third. In the epee contests, Kuwaiti fencers came third after they lost to Qatar 41-45. Saudis won the gold medal. The Kuwaiti team was also third in the sabre contests after it lost to Algeria 28-45. The Saudi team won first place and the gold medal. So far, the Kuwaiti team in the under-17 contests that were concluded on Saturday won two gold medals and three bronze ones, coach Ali Fadel told Kuwait News Agency (KUNA). These results are "humble" since many of the fencers are new ones and do not have due experience, he added. Under-20 contests are due to start on Sunday. The Kuwaiti team to the tourney includes 24 fencers in the three categories, sabre, epee and foil. Up to 200 fencers from Jordan, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Lebanon, Palestine, Algeria and Bahrain are taking part in the tournament, KUNA reported.
