Yemen renews call of releasing al-Moayyad and detainees in Guantanamo
SANA'A, Dec. 25 (Saba)- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Mohyeddin
al-Dhabi has renewed call of Yemen from the United States to
release Sheikh Mohammed al-Moayyad and his companion Mohammed Zayid
as well as Yemeni detainees in Guantanamo.
Repeatedly, Yemen has called for the release of the two men.
Al-Dhabi expressed disappointment of Yemen at the appeal by US
authorities against a court verdict overthrowing terrorism
convictions handed down on two men.
"Yemen is disappointed at the US authorities' appeal against the
court ruling that acquitted," al-Dhabi told 26September weekly.
He added that the the appeal doesn't comply with the nature of
bilateral cooperation between the Yemen and United Stated in their
fighting against terrorism.
Al-Moayyad and Zayid are currently serving custodial sentences in
the United States for alleged complicity with the al-Qaeda terrorist
network and radical Palestinian Hamas movement.
The two men were arrested in Germany in 2003 and extradited to the
United States.
In 2005, a US court sentenced al-Moayyad to 75 years in prison and
Zayid to 45 years over alleged financial support to al- Qaeda and
Hamas.
A court of appeals overturned last October the convictions and
ordered a retrial because of inflammatory testimony about unrelated
terrorism cases in the first trial.
