National strategy for solid waste management ready

SANA'A, Dec. 23 (Saba) - The Local Administration has completed the
drafting of national strategy for solid waste which would be
submitted to Cabinet early in January.

The strategy presents vision to collect and eliminate solid waste
in association with the private sector which should take part in
solid waste management, deputy minister of Local Administration for
Domestic Development Sector Muhammad Zamam said.

Since the shift of the waste management from the ministry of Public
Works and Roads to the Local Administration in 2007, the Local
Administration ministry has been preparing mechanism to reevaluate
the cleanliness and administration systems law as well as the
national strategy for solid waste, Zamam said.


The strategy takes into account that the processes of collecting
and eliminating solid waste should not affect environment,
groundwater wells and agricultural lands near waste dumps.

He touched on technical assistance provided by Germany through the
GTZ through expanding the project for solid waste over 2009-2010.

The expansion was agreed during technical Yemeni-German meeting in
late November in Born city in Germany.

The technical team on preparing the strategy, which consists of
representatives from a number of ministries and governorates, will
hold over the next two days a workshop to discuss the final draft of
the strategy before being submitted to Cabinet early next year.

Foreign and local experts in cleanliness, improving cities and
management of solid waste will take part in the workshop, Zamam
said.
