Thailand prepares to host ASEAN summit Feb 13-16 in Bangkok
BANGKOK, Dec 24 (TNA) - The Thai government has initially decided to hold the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Bangkok February 13-16 if the dates are agreeable to the Chinese government, according to Satit Wongnongtaey, Minister to the Prime Minister's Office.
However, the exact date of the summit, originally scheduled to be held in the Thai capital this month, is still not fixed as Thailand is still awaiting confirmation of the proposed date from the Chinese government.
The Thai foreign ministry has tentatively set the date of the summit to be held between next February 13-16, he said. Other participating countries have already confirmed they are prepared to attend the summit on those dates, except the Chinese government.
As both the date and the venue of the ASEAN summit have been changed frequently along with the lack of the Thai government publicity and slow disbursement of cash for organising it, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva plans to discuss with his ministers during a cabinet meeting Tuesday regarding the possibility of raising budget which will be spent on publicity campaigns, Mr. Satit said.
Permanent Secretary for Foreign Affairs Veerasak Footrakul said 33 important meeting and other documents to be signed during the summit will be given to the Cabinet during for its consideration. After Cabinet approval, the documents will be sent to the House of Representatives in January for consideration as required by the Thai Constitution. (TNA)
