PM says counterfeit Bt1,000 note problem must be solved urgently
BANGKOK, Dec 23 (TNA) - Thai Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday the problem of the widespread appearance of counterfeit Bt1,000 banknotes in the market must be solved quickly because it had affected public confidence on spending.
The authorities must find out how the counterfeit notes are entering the market, Mr. Abhisit said, and the banknote forgers must be dealt with by law.
His remarks were made following reports that many vendors refused to accept Bt1,000 banknotes from buyers while people would withdraw less than Bt1,000 from automatic teller machines (ATMs) per transaction to avoid the possibility of receiving counterfeited notes.
Acknowledging that the public are worried about the fake banknotes, Thai Bankers' Association chairman Apisak Tantivorawong urged the public to inspect details of the Bt1,000 banknotes carefully when receiving them.
Mr. Apisak insisted that banknotes withdrawn from ATMs or from bank counters had no counterfeits because all banks would check the notes with specialised equipment before using them in ATMs.
Deposits of fake banknotes through cash deposit machines are also not possible because the machines would reject straightaway, said Mr. Apisak.
The public should not panic in regard to counterfeit notes as they occur infrequently, he said, adding that there should not be any problem in spending if notes are checked carefully. (TNA)
