Vietnam grab 45 golds for second place at ASEAN University Games

Hanoi (VNA) - With Phan Thi Hanh's bronze medal at the women's 100m butterfly,
Vietnam secured second place in the ASEAN University Games in Malaysia which
wrapped up on Dec. 21.

The country's total medal tally was 45 gold, 28 silver and 23 bronze medals.

Swimmer Nguyen Huu Viet shattered three records at the games.

The Hai Phong-born athlete smashed the men's 200m breaststroke record with a time
in 2 minutes and 21.91 - beating the 2006 time by over five seconds.

In the 50m breaststroke, he finished on 29.25 seconds - almost a second faster
than the old record.

He dazzled the crowd in the men's 100m breaststroke with a time of 1:3:38 -
beating the 2006 record by nearly two seconds.

Martial artists shone for Vietnam through the contest, stacking up medals in
almost every event.

The 12-day game, which kicked off on December 11, attracted students from 10
countries competing in 22 sports.

Malaysia finished well on top, with 89 golds, 77 silvers and 47 bronzes.
Thailand came a distant third with 31 gold, 29 silver and 57 bronze
