Orissa tops list of communal violence
New Delhi, Dec 22 (PTI) Indian eastern state Orissa has
earned the dubious distinction of having the highest number of
cases of communal violence this year, recording a 12-time jump
in such incidents compared to last year, while northern Indian
state Jammu and Kashmir earned laurels for not having a single
such incident.
The all-India figure of 855 incidents of communal
violence has also surpassed that of the previous year's 761,
according to latest government data.
Orissa, which was in news for the attack against
Christians, reported 178 such incidents till November 30 this
year, topping the list followed by Madhya Pradesh (115) and
Uttar Pradesh (104).
Last year, Orissa recorded only 15 such cases while
central Indian state Madhya Pradesh, last year's topper, had
180 such incidents and northern Indian state Uttar Pradesh had
138. Maharashtra, which was second last year with 140 cases,
had 97 cases this year.
There were no incidents of communal riots in Jammu and
Kashmir this year, the official data said which noted that
there was only one such case last year in the state in which
four persons were injured. In 2006 also, there were no
communal incidents.
Among those 153 killed this year in communal riots,
Orissa again topped the list accounting for 28 percent
deaths. A total of 43 people were killed and 78 injured in the
eastern state this year compared to three and 61 respectively
in 2007.
Thrity-two people were killed in Madhya Pradesh this
year while 17 were killed in Maharashtra in communal riots,
the government figures said.
Western Indian state Maharashtra accounted for the
highest number of injured with 473 followed by Uttar Pradesh
(390), Madhya Pradesh (276) and Gujarat (217). In 2007, 99
people were killed and 2,227 were injured in communal riots.
Among states, north-eastern states of Arunachal Pradesh,
Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim also did not
have any incident with communal colour.
Similar was the case with the union territories of
Andaman and Nicobar, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman
and Diu, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry, the government data
said.
