11 lakh more votes polled in six phases of J&K polls than 2002
Jammu, Dec 22 (PTI) In an apparent rebuff to separatists'
poll boycott call, the voter turn-out in the ongoing assembly
elections in northern Indian state Jammu and Kashmir has
witnessed a high jump compared to 2002 polls, with 3055732
electors exercising their franchise so far against 1948239
votes polled last time.
"With the last and the seventh round of elections slated
on December 24, 3055732 voters out of a total electorate of
4813414 have so far exercised their franchise in the six
phases covering 66 assembly constituencies in 19 districts,"
Election Commission sources told PTI.
However, in 2002 polls, only 1948239 people out of the
total 4408776 electorate, voted, they said.
The breakup reveals that 125419 more voters polled in
first phase of polls to 10 assembly constituencies on November
17 (408136 votes polls) as compared to 2002 for same
constituencies, when 282717 votes were polled.
Similarly, 117193 more votes were polled in the second
phase (November 23) to six seats as compared to 2002. 331952
votes were polled this time around compared to 214759 in 2002,
the sources said.
In the third phase of elections on November 30 to five
constituencies, 228425 votes were polled against 157191 in
2002, an increase of 71234 votes.
Continuing the trend, 828877 voters exercised their
franchise in the fourth phase on December 7 (to 18 segments)
against 615792 votes polled in 2002, the election department
sources said.
The fifth phase (11 constituencies on December 13) too
recorded an increase of 168801 votes as compared to 2002. In
2008, a total of 489192 votes were polled against 320391 last
time.
In the sixth phase, 16 constituencies went to polls on
December 17 and a total of 769150 votes were polled against
2002's figures of 357389, an increase of 411761 votes.
The Anantnag constituency, from where former NC minister
Mehboob Beigh won last time, polled 41.32 percent votes
against 7.16 percent (5002 votes) in 2002. Former chief
minister Mufti Mohammad Sayeed is trying his luck this time
from the assembly seat.
The 7th and final round of elections to 21 segments
spread over Srinagar, Jammu and Samba districts, will be held
on December 24. As many as 393 candidates are contesting in
the last phase in which 16,91,797 electors are eligible to
