Thai Cabinet to attend swearing-in ceremony

BANGKOK, Dec 22 (TNA) - Thailand's newly-appointed Cabinet under Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva will be granted an audience for the swearing-in ceremony with His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej on Monday evening before starting work on Tuesday.

The 36-member Cabinet will attend the ceremony at 5pm, and Mr. Abhisit will arrive at Government House at the auspicious time of 8.19am Tuesday to start his work.

All 35 cabinet ministers, except Mr. Abhisit, were appointed by the king on Saturday, while the premier himself was named Thailand's 27th prime minister on December 17.

As the prime minister and deputy prime ministers plan to begin their official duties Tuesday, civil servants assigned to Government House began work there Monday while workers continue to renovate the building which was occupied by protesters from August 26 through December 3.

The protesters vacated the building after the Constitutional Court disbanded three political parties, including the ruling People Power party, on fraud during a general election held in December last year.

Pongsak Siriwong, head of the Government House building and security unit, said workers are working round-the-clock to renovate Government House and its landscape which would cost an estimated Bt25 million.

Renovation is expected to be completed next month, Mr. Pongsak said.

As the Cabinet plans to hold its first meeting on Tuesday, Education Minister Jurin Laksanawisit, who also chairs the government's policy drafting committee, said the policy would be circulated to parties in the coalition government on Monday afternoon and there is no need to discuss it with party leaders.

The policy will be given to the Cabinet on Tuesday for approval, Mr. Jurin said. The policy will be divided into two sections including urgent policies that must be implemented within one year, including solving the nation's social divisions and economic problems.

Less pressing problems will be carried out during the remainder of government's term, he said. (TNA)
