Mohammed Bin Rashid meets EU Parliament Speaker

Dubai, Dec 22, 2008 (WAM) - Vice President and Prime Minister of UAE and Ruler of Dubai His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and Speaker of the European Union (EU) Parliament Hans Gert Pottering yesterday discussed regional issues, the peace process, economic and democratic development and the current global financial crisis.

At a meeting yesterday with Pottering who is on a current visit to the UAE, Sheikh Mohammed stressed that peace in the Middle East, the Gulf and hot zones will not be achieved by armed conflict and violence.

He urged great powers including those in Europe to adopt new policies that are based on dialogue, reciprocal recognition, understanding, respect as well as direct talks among all the parties.

He said the long decades of Arab-Israeli conflict has not brought about the aspired peace, security nor social, psychological and economic stability to peoples of the region, and to the Israelis and Palestinians in particular.

This, he added, is the outcome of the lack of trust and the impotence of international mediators and efforts to achieve balanced solutions that would do justice to all parties to the issues, in particular to the Palestinian people who are still looking for a home country and identity so that they and therefore all peoples of the region would eventually enjoy the much needed peace and security.

Sheikh Mohammed called on the EU countries and the European Parliament to make more efforts to find solutions to the issues and conflicts in the region in a fair and unbiased way so that they gain the trust and respect of peoples of the region who are longing for peace, stability and human and cultural coexistence.

For his part, Pottering hailed the UAE's prudent leadership and vision for the region's future through economic development and religions and cultural openness and tolerance.

He further hailed the UAE's leadership for its wise approach to the global financial crisis adding that the UAE's economy is solid and is playing a positive role in facing the global economic recession.
