Al Ghurair meets President of the European Parliament
Dubai, Dec 22, 2008 (WAM) - Speaker of the Federal National Council (FNC), the country's parliament, Abdul Aziz Abdullah Al Ghurair received yesterday the President of the European Parliament Hans Gert Pottering, who is in UAE as part of a gulf tour.
First Deputy Speaker of FNC Ahmed Shabib Al Dhahiri and a number of FNC members were also present at the meeting. The delegation accompanying Pottering and Consul General of France in Dubai Nada Yafi were also attended the meeting.
The two sides discussed cooperation between FNC and the European Parliament.
The discussions also touched upon various issues of common concern and the issue of the three islands of UAE, Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Musa, which are occupied by Iran and the peaceful efforts of UAE to find solutions for it.
Al Ghurair reviewed with Pottering the gradual development of the FNC and UAE's parliamentary experience as well as the woman's participation in the parliamentary process.
Al Ghurair also explained to the European official, the steady march of the GCC into progress and confederal unity in various fields.
He said that the conference of GCC parliamentarians currently being held in Muscat, Oman is a step towards wider forums in future such as a Gulf parliament in the model of the European parliament.
Pottering hailed the remarkable growth and development UAE has achieved in various avenues, and lauded UAE's parliamentary process and the gradual and paced development in this area. He specially commented on the participation of woman in the parliamentary life of the country.
