S. Korean taekwondo star named as honorary envoy for sports

SEOUL, Dec. 22 (Yonhap) -- Moon Dae-sung, an Athens taekwondo gold medalist
elected to the International Olympic Committee (IOC)'s athlete commission, was
appointed an honorary ambassador for sports diplomacy, the foreign ministry said
Monday.

Foreign Minister Yu Myung-hwan plans to give Moon a letter of appointment on
behalf of President Lee Myung-bak on Tuesday, it added.
Moon, professor at Dong-A University in Busan, will take the unpaid position for
one year. His tenure will be extended by another year if needed.
The ministry bestows honorary ambassadorial posts upon civilan experts or former
government officials with related expertise so that they can support the
government's diplomatic activities.
"Ambassador Moon is expected to conduct various activities for developing South
Korean sports as well as making contributions to realizing the Olympic spirit,"
the ministry said in a press release.
Moon was elected to the IOC athlete commission during the Beijing Olympics
earlier this year.
