Dubai, Dec 21, 2008 (WAM) - H.H Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Foreign Minister, said on Friday that Iran is an important neighbour of the United Arab Emirates and the two countries enjoy many important common interests and ties.

"On this basis, we hope that the establishment of the UAE- Iranian Ministerial Joint Committee will give a positive push to the existing relations between the two countries", he said in a statement to Gulf News.

Sheikh Abdullah added: "We followed with interest Iranian concerns over the issue of search procedures of Iranian visitors at UAE airports".

He added that it is necessary to address the issues affecting relations between the two countries as we are very committed to have positive relations with Iran.

The UAE Foreign Minister continued: "We asked that the upcoming meeting of the Joint consular committee should discuss this issue to ensure that all procedures are followed satisfactorily." He concluded that the UAE feels that it is necessary and important that all issues potentially affecting our bilateral relations with Iran must be resolved in a proper and timely manner.

"There is no doubt that there is an urgent need for a solution to the issues ", he added.

The Minister further stressed that: "We are very committed to such relations." Sheikh Abdullah went on saying: "We asked the Iranians to task the UAE-Iranian Consular Joint Committee, due to meet later this month, with resolving the issue and ensuring that proper search procedures are followed.
