Iran's envoy at UNESCO asks for redefining Declaration of Human Rights
Paris, Dec 20, IRNA - Iran's Permanent Ambassador to UNESCO here Thursday asked for redefining the Declaration of Human Rights in framework of nations' cultural diversity, stressing that imposing norms of a single culture and a single life style globally is double violation of human rights.
Mohammad-Reza Majidi added in an interview with IRNA on the
anniversary of ratification of the International Declaration of the
Human Rights and the discussions at western media on the matter, "The
human beings are from various living habitats with various cultures
and different religions."
He added, "There are also religious minorities and in order to respect
the human rights and the liberty of different nations, we need a
thorough revision in the current text of the International declaration
of the Human Rights in which while the need to observe certain
absolute rights, the rights of the different nations, too, with
different cultures would be put in the focus of attention." Iran's
permanent ambassador at the UNESCO referred to the upcoming UNESCO
conference in a fortnight on human rights and cultural diversity,
arguing, "That gathering would be convened thanks to efforts made for
redefining the global values while respecting the norms of various
cultures, and would in fact be a move aimed at revising the
International Declaration of Human Rights towards perfection."
He said, "The gathering would be cosponsored by the Permanent
Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran at UNESCO and the
Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) that has had an active cooperation with us
in that respect."
