Manama, Apr. 29 (BNA): The Permanent Representative of the Kingdom of Bahrain to the United Nations in New York, Ambassador Jamal Faris Al Ruwaie, gave a statement at the 2015 Review Conference of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), in which he affirmed that the sole guarantor to avoid the danger of nuclear weapons and prevent their use anew is the total and final elimination of such weapons.
Speaking on behalf of the Arab bloc, he said the Arab states believe that possessing and developing nuke weapons represent a big threat to international peace and security.
Ambassador Ruwaie noted that the Arab countries have welcomed the Palestinian State’s joining of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), considering it another indication of Arab states’ commitment to nuclear disarmament and nonproliferation of such arms.
The Arab bloc also welcomed the growing interest in the nuclear effects on humanity, saying it is high time to start disarmament talks conductive to an all-encompassing nuclear accord whereby owning, creating, producing, testing, stockpiling, transporting, using or threatening to use nuclear arms will be banned and their destruction clearly stated.
The Arab countries believe that NPT goals could only be achieved when the treaty is universalized and joined by non-member states as non- nuclear members and that any delay in this regard will hinder the reinforcement of the nuclear non-proliferation endeavors.
The Arab countries are urging Israel, the only country in the Middle East which has not yet joined the treaty, to join soon and subjugate all its nuclear facilities to inspection by The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) as stipulated by the 1981 UN Security Council resolution number 487.
