Vietnam, Laos' veterans meet at former base
Hanoi (VNA) - Former Vietnamese volunteer soldiers and experts who fought alongside
Lao revolutionaries in the past wars were reunited in Samneau, the famed revolution
base in eastern Houaphan province of Laos .
The Dec. 17 meeting, themed "Samneau base - symbol of Vietnam-Laos special
solidarity and combating alliance", also saw the attendance of To Huy Rua,
Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam Central Committee (CPVCC) and Head of
the CPVCC's Commission of Information and Education.
On the Lao side were Sisavath Keobounphan, member of the Lao People's Revolutionary
Party (LPRP) Politburo and Chairman of the Lao Front for National Construction, and
Phandouangchith Vongsa, member of the LPRP Central Committee and Head of the LPRP
CC's Commission of Information and Training, among others.
Addressing the event, Rua said he was deeply moved when returning to Samneau, which
has seen extremely arduous times of the two countries' resistance wars for
independence and freedom.
He went on to say that Vietnam and Laos have built a pure and loyal
solidarity that has been formed and fostered throughout their history.
On behalf of the Lao side, Phandouangchith appreciated the wholehearted and
efficient support and assistance the Vietnamese Party, State and people in general
and Vietnamese volunteer soldiers have given to the Lao people in their cause for
national liberation in the past and the national construction at present.
He also affirmed the determination of the Lao Party, State and people to continue
fostering and protecting the special rapport between the two countries.
The participants paid a minute's silence in honour of their comrades who fell down
during the war time.
Also the same day, Houaphan province hosted a conference to promote investment in
the province and four northern provinces of Laos .
Lao Deputy Prime Minister Somsavat Lengsavad, CPV CC Secretary Rua, and other
relevant officials joined the two countries' businesses in the conference, which
was held by the Lao Ministry of Planning and Investment in coordination with the
Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam.
The Lao officials gave answers to the businesses' queries with aim of removing
obstacles and facilitating Vietnam 's investment in Laos .
On the occasion, the Lao Government handed an investment licence to Vietnam 's
Hoang Anh Gia Lai Joint Stock Company to plant 10,000 ha of rubber trees in
southern Laos .
Vietnamese businesses presented 2.5 billion VND in donation to Houaphan province to
build its revolutionary museum.
According to the Lao Ministry of Planning and Investment, Vietnam since 1989 has
poured 760 million USD in 14 projects in Laos , involving hydro-electricity,
eco-tourist and agricultural fields. Vietnam has emerged as the top foreign
investor in Laos in 2008.-Enditem
