UAE, UNESCO putting final touches to UNESCO Hamdan award

Paris, Dec 18, 2008 (WAM) - UAE and UN officials are putting the final touches of a draft document for the UNESCO Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize for Outstanding Practice and Performance in Enhancing Effectiveness of Teachers, Khoula Bahloug, Manager of Excellence Unit at the Prize, announced today.

She said the Prize delegation had met with educational officials at the UN organisation to discuss the guidelines for nominating bodies and candidates and the development of a detailed timeline for the Prize activities to ensure that all aspects of the prize will contribute to its success.

According to her, the $270,000 award is granted every two years from the next Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Award for Distinguished Academic Performance 2009.

The Award is presented to the contributed authorities and foundations in their countries- especially the growing ones in improving teachers' performances via presented workshops, tournaments to teachers or contributions help to improve teachers' performances.

Dr Ahmed Sayyad, UNESCO Assistant Director General for External Relations and Cooperation, commended educational initiatives launched by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai and UAE Minister of Finance.

''Hamdan's distinguished initiatives are a true addition to the UAE asset and its message of love and noble values to the whole world," he said.

''We are proud of our partnership with the Sheikh Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Award for Outstanding Academic Performance to establish a joint UNESCO/Hamdan Bin Rashid Al-Maktoum Prize which would commend outstanding practice and performance in enhancing the effectiveness of teachers, he said during the joint meeting.

The prize will give priority to developing country contexts, as well as to marginalised and disadvantaged communities from the wider global context. The prize will reward Member States, Organisations, and Institutions at all levels for outstanding contributions made, through teacher-related activities, to enhancing the quality of teaching and learning.

The new prize will reward institutions that have made an exceptional contribution to improving teacher competences and practices and aim to improve teaching practices around the world, in particular in developing countries and marginalized communities. It is consistent with the Organization's mandate and in line with overarching objective of "Attaining quality education for all" as set out in the Medium-Term Strategy 2008-2013.
