Community Development Authority calls for collaboration to uphold Human Rights for all UAE residents

Dubai, Dec 18, 2008 (WAM) - The Community Development Authority of Dubai (CDA) today held a human rights training workshop with representatives from various government bodies in an effort to increase collaboration between government authorities on the monitoring of human rights.

The workshop, held today at the CDA offices, was chaired by Dr Maryam Matar, Director General of the CDA and Dr Khaled Alloush, Resident Coordinator of the United Nations Organisation in the UAE. Representatives from the Dubai Police Human Rights monitoring department, the UAE Human Rights Association, the Dubai Foundation for Women and Children, Awqaf '&' Minors Affairs Foundation and CDA employees attended the training session.

"The UAE is a signatory to the United Nations Charter of Human Rights. It is part of the CDA's mandate to safeguard the rights of every individual living in Dubai, regardless of nationality or profession," said Dr Mariam Matar.

"We are urging all government departments to work together to ensure that the human rights laws and regulations part of the UAE constitution and the international treaties and declarations signed by the UAE are applicable for all residents of Dubai and to provide a suitable example for other nations in the region." "As a society we need to make sure that we do not become complacent about the issue of human rights. Human rights violations, such as the abuse of domestic workers and all forms of discrimination in the work place and recruitment process based on race and/or religion need to be treated as a serious issue and appropriate action must be taken against the perpetrators," added Dr. Matar.

The UAE recently agreed to adopt 37 human rights recommendations suggested by the international community including strengthening regulations on living conditions for labourers, creating legislation to increase child protection and increasing protection against human trafficking.

The CDA is collaborating closely with a number of government and non-government organizations to provide a social safety net for all Emirati and Non-Emiratis living in Dubai, as per the Dubai 2015 plan.

Dr Alloush said : "It's good to see that there is such commitment to upholding human rights in the UAE. It is important that the government bodies responsible for implementing social protection in this country are fully aware of the basic rights of each individual."
