PM-elect Abhisit: New Cabinet could be unveiled in days

BANGKOK, Dec 16 (TNA) - Thailand's newly-elected prime minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said Tuesday that the new cabinet could be announced in the next few days after he is formally appointed by His Majesty the King.

The 44-year-old leader of the Democrat Party, Thailand's oldest, who was elected the country's 27th prime minister by members of the House of Representatives on Monday said he was still awaiting royal appointment, expected to be announced late Wednesday.

On allocation of cabinet seats to the Democrat Party and its political allies which threw support behind Mr. Abhisit during Monday's premiership election, Democrat secretary-general Suthep Thaugsuban reemphasised that each party would receive the ministerial seats promised earlier and there would be no one from the now-defunct Council for National Security (CNS) given a cabinet seat.

Rival politicians to the Democrat Party had charged even before Monday's election of the prime minister that senior military officers had allegedly lobbied several members of the parliament (MPs) to cast vote for Mr. Abhisit.

Senior military officers calling the CNS launched a bloodless coup on September 19, 2006 and topped the elected government of then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra.

Mr. Suthep said the commerce minister's portfolio would be given to the Phum Jai Thai Party (the reformed Matchimathipataya Party) so that he or she could work comfortably with Mr. Abhisit who had declared earlier that he would lead the economic team.

Although the new administration is expected to encounter several problems, especially economy, Mr. Suthep said he is optimistic that the new coalition could last the remaining three years in office.

As the new government is being formed, northeastern MPs loyal to Newin Chidchob, formerly a staunch supporter of the now convicted and living in self-imposed exile former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, met with senior Democrat Party members on Tuesday afternoon on maintaining the populist programmes initiated by Mr. Thaksin and on amending the 2007 charter, written by appointeesof the September 2006 coupmakers.

The Democrat Party has reportedly agreed to these issues proposed by the Newin faction on the condition that their members gave their votes supporting Mr. Abhisit to become new prime minister.

Members of Puea Thai Party, meanwhile, filed complaints with the Election Commission (EC) charging that several members of the Newin faction who were banned from entering politics for five years had now joined the new government of Mr. Abhisit, and asked the EC to investigate the matter. (TNA)
