Egyptian company launches 3G mobile phone network in N. Korea

PYONGYANG, Dec. 15 Kyodo -
Egypt's mobile carrier giant Orascom Telecom Holding on Monday launched a
third-generation mobile phone network in North Korea, the country's first such
system.

The company, the largest mobile network operator in the Middle East and Africa,
had been working on construction of the network's infrastructure with the goal
of starting its service this month.
A ceremony was held in Pyongyang to mark the occasion, attended by Orascom
chairman and chief executive officer Naguib Sawiris as well as senior North
Korean officials, including Vice Premier Ro Tu Chol and post and
telecommunications minister Ryu Yong Sop.
