Strauss becomes 10th Englishman to hit two hundreds in a Test

Chennai, Dec 14 (PTI) Opener Andrew Strauss Sunday became
the 10th English batsman and the 51st overall to hit hundreds
in both innings of a Test match when he reached the triple
figure against India here.

Strauss, who scored 123 in the first innings and followed
it up with a 108-run knock in the second innings in the
ongoing first Test, joined prolific run getters like Sunil
Gavaskar and Ricky Ponting, who have achieved the feat on
three occasions.

Strauss, who missed the feat in 2004 in his debut match
against the West Indies at Lord's when he was run out 17 runs
short of a second innings century, put on a resolute
performance in the first innings when others had failed to
stay at the crumbling wicket here.

Strauss had his share of luck when he was dropped by
Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni on 15 on the third day of
the Test Saturday. He flourished thereafter to cross the
100-mark with a flick off Zaheer Khan to mid on. He eventually
fell to a Harbhajan Singh delivery in the post-lunch session.

Strauss now has 14 centuries to his credit in Test
cricket.

The right-hander was recalled to the England Test squad
for the 2008 tour of New Zealand after being omitted from the
party which toured Sri Lanka earlier this year.

He repaid the faith by becoming only the second batsman
in the history to have scored centuries in each innings at
Chepauk.

Sri Lankan Duleep Mendis (105 in each innings) is the
only other batsman to have achieved the feat here.

Strauss also put together the highest-ever partnership
for the fourth wicket stand here by a visiting team in the
company of Paul Collingwood when the duo put on 214 runs.

The duo bettered the earlier best of Dean Jones and Allan
Border -- 178 in the famous tied Test (second in the history
of cricket) here in 1987.

The other England players to have hit hundreds in both
innings of a Test match are -- Charles Russel, Herbert
Sutcliffe, Wally Hammond, Eddie Paynter, Dennis Crompton,
Graham Gooch, Alex Stewart, Michael Vaughan and Marcus
Trescothick. PTI RE
