Khorfakkan welcomes CMA-CGM's giant container ship
Khofakkan, Dec 14, 2008 (WAM) - The Gulftainer's Khorfakkan Container Terminal (KCT) in the emirate of Sharjah yesterday received the biggest container ship ever to berth at the port, the 347.5 metre long 'CMA-CGM Vela' during its debut in the Gulf.
Captian Cubasch, master of the CMA-CGM Vela which has the capacity of 11660 typical containers, said handling the mega- container ship was made easy thanks to the modern infrastructure and equipment at the port.
A welcoming party was held by Gulftainer, operator of KCT, on the 5th wharf by for the crew of the ship CMA CGM Vela has set a new record for the largest containership to call at KCT and it is also currently the French-German shipping line's largest vessel size in its fleet.
The vessel which was built by Daewoo Shipbuilding '&' Marine Engineering Co Ltd has a deadweight tonnage of 130,700 tonnes, 700 reefer plugs, and a service speed of 24 knots and requires a maximum draft of 15.5 metres. It has an overall length of 347.5 metres and a breadth of 45.20 metres.
