Minsk, Dec 13, IRNA -Iran and Belarus on Friday inked a dlrs 36 million contract for
inauguration of the second phase of the production line of Samand
sedan with up to 60,000 sedans/year production capacity after
commissioning of the project in about 18 months.

The contract was signed by Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on
Iran's side and Alexi Vagnaf, managing director of Belarus largest
auto and parts-making complex, Unison, on Belarus part.

Addressing the contract signing ceremony, Vagnaf said, "The dlrs 36
million project will be financed by Iran's Export Development Bank and
will be operational in 18 months."
Vagnaf said once second phase of the project comes on stream, Unison's
annual car production capacity will reach as high as 60,000 sedans.

By 2010, the plant's production capacity will increase to 120,000
vehicles per year which will enable Iran Khodro Company (IKCO) to
export passenger cars to Central Asian countries and possibly to the
European Union market, said Vagnaf.

"Samand is the sole Islamic brand car to be built in Europe by Belarus
per market standards and it can be exported to whole the Commonwealth
of Independent States and West European countries." He added that the
Samand project is second in the list after a project on development of
Jofeyr oil deposit in Iran.

Based on the incoming reports, a Samand car switch was offered to
Iran's Ambassador to Belarus, Abdollah Hosseini, in the ceremony.

Mottaki heading a high-ranking economic, industrial and political
delegation left here for Minsk on Thursday for a two-day visit to hold
talks with Belarusian senior officials on bilateral cooperation and
developing relations.

The first phase of the Samand was inaugurated in July 2007 by IKCO -
the largest carmaker in the Middle East, Central Asia and North Africa.

The trade volume between Belarus and Iran stood at USD 83.9m in 2008.

Belarus exports potash fertilizers, synthetic fibers, trucks, and
tractors to Iran and imports fruits and cars from the Islamic Republic.

Iran and Belarus also will open a joint bank, Torgovy Kapital (TK Bank)
